Swearing-In Ceremony Dr. Eric Hall was sworn in as a new Board of Education member. He was appointed to fill the vacancy, and his term will end in 2026.

Consent Agenda Seven items were listed on the consent agenda for approval: AIG Plan, Field Trip Approvals, Career and Technical Education Application for State/Federal Funding, Teacher Pathway Program, Public Consultant Group Service Agreement, Gifts, and Policy 8325 - Daily Deposits.

Board of Education Business Board members were notified of a free training session available to them in July.

Recognitions The Board of Education recognized students and educators, including the Science Olympiad District 1st Place Team from Alexander-Wilson Elementary School, Governor's School Students, All State Arts Students, Western Alamance High School Jazz Band, National Board Certified Teachers and Counselors, and Ann Marie Collins Honored Educator Scholarship recipient Windy Lampson from Southeast Alamance High School.

Superintendent/Finance/Human Resources Representatives from Yonder presented virtually about their lockable pouch system for students to secure electronic devices and create phone-free schools. Yonder pouches allow students to keep their phones throughout the day and unlock them before leaving school. ABSS anticipates upcoming legislation around phones in schools and has begun a proactive search for methods and solutions, exploring best practices and options. There will be more discussion, along with opportunities for staff and families to provide feedback.

Dr. Fleming provided a 2025-2026 budget update. The County Manager's recommended budget includes roughly $11.3 million cut from current expense funding. Dr. Fleming mentioned that the per-pupil expenditure is anticipated to decrease around $500 per student. Additionally, the low wealth funding provided at the state level could be in jeopardy. Dr. Fleming is working to collaborate with county leadership as they continue budget discussions. The Board of Commissioners will host a public hearing to discuss the proposed county budget on June 2 at 6:30 pm in Graham's historic courthouse.

Operations Mr. Hook presented the School Resource Officer MOU as an informational item that will be included on the consent agenda at an upcoming board meeting. A resolution to proceed with posting a Design-Build RFQ to complete all aspects of HVAC upgrades at Graham High School was presented and approved unanimously. A proposal for naming the Walter M. Williams High School basketball court in honor of former staff member and basketball coach Tommy Cole was also approved unanimously.

Human Resources Ms. Anderson presented the personnel report, which was approved unanimously. Dr. Sean McWherter was approved as the new Assistant Superintendent of Academics. Dr. McWherter comes from Guilford County Schools and brings experience across every level of public education, including elementary, middle, high school, and district leadership. He has a strong track record of supporting school improvement and student success through initiatives such as PLCs, MTSS, PBIS, and Advanced Teaching Roles. In addition to his instructional leadership, Dr. McWherter has managed operational areas and brings expertise in district finance, federal programs, and strategic planning.

Dr. Christina Armfield has been named Executive Director of Exceptional Children. With nearly 20 years of experience in ABSS, Dr. Armfield will move from her role as Director of Exceptional Children and bring vast knowledge and continuity to the department.
