Burlington, NC – Annie Goldberg, ACSC, school counselor at Broadview Middle School, has been named one of five finalists for the prestigious 2026 School Counselor of the Year award by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). The announcement recognizes Goldberg's exceptional work in transforming student outcomes.
Remarkable Results Through Innovative Programming
"I impact what students know and are able to do in all areas: academic, behavioral, and social emotional to put them on track for postsecondary and career success," Goldberg explained in her submission video. Through data driven programming, Goldberg has created innovative initiatives that address the diverse needs of Broadview students.
Her programs include a Newcomer Program supporting English language learners, a Beyond 12 Program that makes college accessible for first generation students, and initiatives that help students create books telling their own stories. Goldberg also collaborated with teacher Chanel Jones, the 2025 Piedmont Triad Teacher of the Year, on two impactful programs Jones brought to her: a laundry initiative that addresses basic needs so students can focus on learning and restorative justice circles that help students resolve conflicts peacefully. Her comprehensive approach has led to significant improvements in academic achievement, attendance, and school climate at Broadview Middle School.
Community Recognition
Staff members at Broadview consistently praise Goldberg's impact. Teachers note her remarkable ability to see potential in every student and her commitment to equitably and comprehensively meeting student needs.
Students featured in her submission video, including Iker, Jorge, Anthony, and Arielle, spoke about how Ms. Goldberg has helped them feel like they belong, see college as a real possibility, and believe their voices deserve to be heard.

The School Counselor of the Year Selection Committee, which includes principals, school counselors, and representatives from organizations such as The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, National PTA, and The National Association of Elementary School Principals, selected finalists based on school counseling innovations, exemplary programs, leadership and advocacy skills, and contributions to student outcomes.
"School counselors are vital to students' academic achievement, social/emotional development and plans for life after graduation," said Jill Cook, CAE, ASCA executive director. "The 2026 finalists have demonstrated their commitment to the mission of the profession to help each and every student succeed."
