When most parents think back to their own high school experience, career preparation might have meant a shop class or typing course. Today's Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at Alamance-Burlington School System look very different and the opportunities available to students might surprise you.

More Than Just "Vocational Training"

"A lot of people don't realize the breadth of what we offer," says ABSS Career & Technical Education Director Terri Drummond. "We're not just talking about traditional trades anymore. We have pathways in computer science, healthcare, digital design, finance, and so much more. And many of these courses allow students to earn college credit and industry-recognized credentials while they're still in high school."

In fact, ABSS offers more than 40 distinct career pathways organized into six major cluster groupings, each designed to prepare students for high-demand careers or further education in their chosen field.

Building & Moving: Hands-On Skills for In-Demand Careers

If a student loves working with their hands or figuring out how things work, this cluster offers pathways in advanced manufacturing, construction, and automotive technology. From CCP Machining and Welding to Drafting Engineering and Carpentry, students learn skills that can lead directly to well-paying careers or provide a strong foundation for engineering degrees.

These aren't just classes—students are working with real equipment and learning industry-standard practices. They graduate with certifications that employers recognize and value.

Caring for Communities: Making a Difference

Healthcare, education, and public safety pathways fall under this cluster, preparing students for some of the most rewarding careers available. From dreams of becoming a nurse, teacher, firefighter, or social worker, ABSS offers the foundation they need.

Programs like Biomedical Technology, Nursing Fundamentals, and CCP Early Childhood allow students to explore these fields through hands-on experiences. The CCP Emergency Medical Technology program even allows students to earn their EMT certification before graduation.

Connecting & Supporting Success: The Digital Economy

In our increasingly connected world, this cluster prepares students for careers in technology and business. Computer Science, Python Programming, and CompTIA IT Fundamentals give students real coding experience, while Entrepreneurship and Microsoft Office Administration teach business fundamentals.

Technology touches every industry now. Even if students don't become programmers, these digital skills will serve them well in any career path they choose.

Creating & Experiencing: Where Art Meets Career

From video games to blockbuster films, high-tech art positions are in demand. This cluster includes pathways in 3D Modeling & Animation, Adobe Visual Design, Adobe Video Design, and Interior Design. Students learn industry-standard software and techniques used by professional designers and content creators.

The Culinary Arts Applications program has also become increasingly popular, teaching students not just how to cook, but how to manage a professional kitchen and understand the hospitality industry.

Cultivating Resources: Sustainable Futures

These programs combine hands-on experience with scientific knowledge, preparing students for careers in agriculture, veterinary science, environmental management, and food science.

Investing in the Future: Business & Finance

Understanding money matters for everyone, and this cluster gives students a head start on financial literacy and business skills. The Academy of Finance, Accounting, Business Essentials, and Financial Planning pathways prepare students for careers in banking, financial advising, business management, and entrepreneurship.

The CCP Advantage: College Credit in High School

One of the most valuable aspects of ABSS's CTE programs is the College and Career Promise (CCP) component. Several specialized CCP pathways are available in addition to the regular high school offerings, allowing students to earn college credits that transfer to community colleges and universities—completely free.

This means students have multiple ways to get ahead in their college education. Whether through dedicated CCP courses or through articulated credit agreements that recognize their high school CTE coursework, students can graduate with college credits already completed, saving significant time and money on their degree.

Real-World Experience: Beyond the Classroom

ABSS CTE programs don't just teach—they connect students with real-world experiences through:

  • CTE Internships: Work alongside professionals in your field of interest

  • CTE Apprenticeships: Earn while you learn with structured training programs

  • Job Shadowing: Spend a day experiencing a career firsthand

  • Field Trips: Visit workplaces and see careers in action

  • Guest Speakers: Learn from industry professionals who share their experiences

These work-based learning opportunities help students understand what careers actually look like day-to-day, making them better prepared to choose their path.

Starting the Conversation

The variety of opportunities can feel overwhelming, but students don't have to decide their entire future right now. CTE pathways allow them to explore interests, discover hidden talents, and develop skills that will serve them regardless of which career they ultimately choose.

"We encourage students to try something that interests them," says Mrs. Drummond. "You might be surprised by what you discover about yourself."

Interested in exploring CTE pathways for your student? The best place to start is with their school counselor or career development coordinator. They can explain which programs are available at your student's school, help identify pathways that align with their interests, and guide families through the enrollment process.

Whether your student is college-bound, career-focused, or still exploring their options, ABSS Career & Technical Education provides valuable skills and experiences that will serve them well in whatever future they choose.
