Board members nominated and unanimously elected Sandy Ellington-Graves and Dan Ingle to serve as Chair and Vice Chair for the next year.

Board of Education Business

Chair Ellington-Graves reminded everyone that the next meeting would be the joint meeting with County Commissioners and State delegates held on January 12, followed by the Board of Education Work Session on January 13.

Curriculum

Dr. McWherter presented a third 2026-2027 calendar option based on feedback from the calendar survey. The draft reflected feedback to move teacher workdays to Mondays and/or Fridays instead of mid-week workdays. The third draft calendar was approved unanimously. Communications is working on the finalized versions of the calendar and will share with staff and families once they are ready.

Dr. McWherter and Emily-Lynn Adkins shared information about inclement weather decisions. They covered how decisions are made, communications, and the option for remote learning days. The district is working on a document for families and staff to provide more information.

Dr. McWherter and Dr. Haley presented information and data on the Mastery Connect benchmark tool. Mastery Connect is a comprehensive K-12 digital assessment management system designed to support standards-based learning and data-driven instruction. It is currently being piloted in High School EOC courses.  

Student Services

Dr. Davis shared a contract amendment from the Department of Exceptional Children. The original Speech Inspirations contract was for $200,000.00, and the proposed amendment would add $150,000.00 to that amount from Federal dollars. The amendment was approved unanimously.

Operations

Dennis Frye requested approval of Apple equipment to support student digital resource needs at three elementary schools: Elon, Eastlawn, and Andrews. The total amount for this will be $723,793.57 from Technology CIP funds. The purchase was approved unanimously.

Personnel Report

Dr. Fleming presented the personnel report for approval. The report was approved unanimously.
