Board of Education Meeting Highlights January 13, 2026

Superintendent

Representatives from SchoolCAMP shared the rezoning process and outlined the key dates and timeline. A community survey kicked off on January 5 and will close on January 15. There will be two opportunities for community feedback during in-person sessions in January. SchoolCAMP shared an overview of data collected from Board Members in the BOE priority survey.

Curriculum

Dr. McWherter shared information about the Advanced Teacher Roles (ATR) grant that was awarded to ABSS from the Department of Public Instruction. ABSS was awarded $1,416,657 over three years for the implementation of ATR in the district. ATR models create additional career pathways for teachers with a track record of success, coaching peers, leading teachers, and supporting more students. ATR offers additional salary incentives and leadership opportunities outside of the traditional pathway. ABSS will pilot this opportunity in 4 schools during the 2026-2027 school year before expanding. More information for interested educators coming soon!

Dr. McWherter shared a list of field trips that were approved by the Board of Education unanimously.

  • Southern Alamance High School is requesting approval to take the baseball team to Wilmington, NC, to participate in a Baseball Tournament from April 5–7, 2026.

  • Southern Alamance High School is requesting approval to take its cheerleaders to the UCA Nationals in Orlando, FL, from January 29–February 3, 2026.

  • Walter Williams High School is requesting approval to take the students in the Financial Academy to New York City as part of their biennial WWHS AOF Bulldogs on Wall Street trip from April 14-17, 2026.

  • Sylvan Elementary School is requesting approval to take the 5th grade students to Ripley Aquarium in Myrtle Beach for the "Sleep with the Sharks" program from April 23–24, 2026.  

  • The Teacher Cadet program is requesting permission to take current teacher cadet students to NC State FTA/Teacher Cadet Conference at the Embassy Suites in Greensboro from March 6–7, 2026.  

  • Western Alamance High School is requesting approval to take current Teacher Cadet students to the NC State FTA/Teacher Cadet Conference at the Embassy Suites in Greensboro on May 1, 2026.

Student Services

Dr. Davis presented a list of grants awarded to participants in the Teacher Leadership Academy through Impact Alamance:

  • Sara Mason from Eastern Alamance High School received $20,000.00 for The Eagle’s Perch. The funds will be used to revitalize the media center to create an inclusive, flexible, and collaborative learning space for all students.

  • Stephanie Ector from Elon Elementary School received $18,392.00 for her project titled Fun Without the Sun. The funds for this project will be used to install a 20x30-foot sunshade over one of the playgrounds to provide students with a safe and comfortable area for outdoor play and learning.

  • Shavon Via from E.M. Holt Elementary received $20,000.00 to support Project-Based Learning with Agriculture Education. She will use funds to create an interactive outdoor agricultural learning space featuring raised garden beds, an outdoor kitchen, and a solar-powered greenhouse.

  • Jennifer Payne from Hawfields Middle School received $20,000.00 for her project titled Reimagining Our Media Center: Upgrading Our Media Center for Innovation. She will use the funds to transform an outdated library, originally designed in 2000, into a modern, flexible, and technology-driven learning environment.

  • Sara Realini from Haw River Elementary received $20,000.00 for her project titled Strengthening Student Focus and Achievement through Behavioral and Sensory Supports. Sara will use funds to address rising behavioral and attention-related challenges by funding sensory tools, calm-down room equipment, and classroom supports to help students self-regulate, maintain focus, and stay engaged in learning.

  • Bre Shipmon from Hillcrest Elementary received $10,304.00 for the The Hornet's Nest project. Funds will be used to create a multifunctional student success space featuring a Leadership Hub, club area, and PBIS support center to strengthen student voice, positive behavior, and school culture.

  • Marcia Parker from South Mebane Elementary received $5,000.00 to create a Sensory Room. This space will be created to help students in grades K - 5 regulate their emotions and sensory needs, promoting focus, self-control, and readiness to learn.

  • Mary Moorhouse from Ray Street Academy received $11,304.00 to support her project titled The Ray Street Academy Historical Museum and Library. The funds will be used to develop an in-house exhibit and learning space in partnership with the African American Cultural Arts Museum, featuring on-site and mobile displays to share the history and legacy of this significant landmark with the broader community.  

Additional grants included:

  • Hawfields Middle School received a grant from Piedmont Electric - Bright Ideas Grant in the amount of $1,943.30. Funds from this grant will be used to upgrade weight room facilities, creating a safer, more inclusive, and developmentally appropriate environment for all students.

  • The district received a grant from Impact Alamance in the amount of $50,000.00. The funds will be used for the Strategic Planning process, including contracting with Education Elements and hosting community listening sessions.

Gifts were presented for information and will be included in the consent agenda for the upcoming meeting:

  • E.M. Yoder Elementary School recently received a donation from an anonymous donor in the amount of $24,500.00.   The funds will support the replacement of the school’s existing awnings, enhancing the campus for students and staff.

  • The Eastern Alamance High School Band Program received a donation of $1,250.00 from the Mebane Women’s Club.  The funds will be used to purchase a bass clarinet, enhancing musical opportunities for the students.

  • Eastern Alamance High School received a $1,000.00 donation from the Mebane Women’s Club.  The funds will be used to purchase new physical education equipment for students.

  • South Mebane Elementary School received a $1,000.00 donation from the Mebane Women’s Club.  The funds will be used to purchase new equipment and enhance the school’s physical education program.

  • The Mebane Women’s Club donated $1,000.00 to Hawfields Middle School to purchase new equipment and further enhance the physical education program.

  • E.M. Yoder Elementary School received $1,000.00 from the Mebane Women’s Club.  The physical education program will use the funds to purchase new equipment.

  • Alexander Wilson Elementary School received a $1,000.00 donation from the Mebane Woman’s Club.  The donation will support the school's physical education program.

  • Buckner HeavyLift Cranes, LLC donated $1,000.00 to Alexander Wilson Elementary School to support the construction of a playground shelter.  Mr. Walter Ray of the Alamance County Sheriff’s Department has been actively working to secure community support for this initiative.

  • Cummings High School received a $3,500.00 donation from Hibbett Sports in recognition of their grand opening celebration.  The funds will be used to support student field trips, staff appreciation initiatives, and athletic program needs.

Operations

Mr. Hook presented contracts for KNC Technologies for the installation of security cameras and installation of keyless door entry systems at Alexander Wilson Elementary School and Altamahaw-Ossipee Elementary School.

  

  • Alexander Wilson Elementary School contract amount is $138,798.79

  • Altamahaw-Ossipee Elementary School contract amount is $155,561.31

Policy

Dr. Davis presented proposed revisions to 25 policies. The Board will review the policies again at an upcoming meeting before a vote.  

Personnel Report

Ms. Anderson presented the personnel report for approval. The report was approved unanimously.
