Special Presentation
Students from Elon University’s Community-Based Senior Seminar in Public Policy course worked with ABSS staff to propose revisions to policy 6320 Use of Student Transportation Services. Stakeholder feedback was shared through a community survey, and Elon students presented their recommendations on Section C, which addresses transportation of minors using personal vehicles. Two alternatives were presented, and the students recommended Policy Alternative 1. Alternative 1 prohibits the transportation of students in private vehicles by district employees except in cases of a verified emergency circumstance.

Superintendent
Dr. Fleming shared that over 483 staff members had requested leave on Friday, May 1, 2026. Out of those requests, around 276 are unfilled by substitutes. In addition to these numbers, there are classified staff who have requested leave. Dr. Fleming noted that the number of staff absent will far exceed the number of adults needed to support student safety, and he suggested options moving forward.
The Board of Education voted unanimously to transition Friday, May 1, 2026, from a student day to an optional teacher workday. Students will not have to make up this day.
Curriculum
Dr. McWherter provided information on CTE trends from 2023 to 2025. ABSS has consistently performed higher than the state average in proficiency trends. Additionally, the district exceeds the state goal (32.23%) for credential attainment with 70.1%. Since 2023, CTE has embedded credentials, expanded the health sciences pathway, and implemented a data-driven coaching model.
