They're rocking the look! After spending time identifying the main idea and details in a passage about sea animals, Ms. Mills' kindergarten class at R. Homer Andrews Elementary School starred in a short video that we'll share soon! We finished just in time for lunch and pizza was on the menu. Now that's one cool combo!

Today’s joint Board of Education meeting with local elected officials was a fantastic opportunity to put our students' work in the spotlight at the Career & Technical Education Center. Guests enjoyed a delicious breakfast prepared by Ms. Tiffany King’s culinary students, set among stunning floral arrangements from Southern Alamance High School’s nationally-recognized FFA Chapter Floriculture Team. The talent continued at the tables, where visitors received custom-carved nameplates from Mr. David Miles’ carpentry students and 3D-printed letters from Mr. Bothwell’s Technology and Engineering class. These projects are perfect examples of how our hands-on #ABSSCTE programs empower students to lead, create, and prepare for the future. We’ve also included the graphics from our meeting placemats to highlight the many CTE pathways available across the district! #ThisisABSS

That wraps up the first week of 2026! There is a lot to be proud of, including over at Grove Park Elementary. Our Pre-K learners are developing independence and social skills through hands-on play in centers. Over in Kindergarten, students are mastering sight words during Fundations, while fourth graders are diving deep into their study of Magnetism. Fifth graders have been hard at work researching Body Systems and are getting ready to share their findings with the class next week! And we have to celebrate Luna, who earned a well-deserved trip to the book vending machine thanks to her outstanding behavior and ClassDojo points. Starting the weekend with Frindle—what could be better? Enjoy your new book, Luna, and happy Friday, everyone! #ThisisABSS

Today, the Piedmont Triad Education Consortium (PTEC) recognized Alamance Burlington Early College at ACC and Hawfields Middle School as Signature Schools for their exemplary commitment to excellence in education. PTEC is a collaborative effort between the eighteen K-12 school districts in central North Carolina and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Two schools from each district are recognized annually as Signature Schools. We are proud of Principal Fliehman at ABEC and Principal Acome at Hawfields for their exceptional leadership. Also, massive shout-out to the staff for leading our students to success!

A quick hour on the move at Graham High School clearly shows high levels of academic rigor and student engagement across campus! Ms. Surgeon paused for a photo with one of her students in Interior Design as they were deep into research on NYC living costs and floor plans. The Fire Academy juniors were sharpening their emergency prep time with equipment weighing over 40 pounds! Next, we visited the GHS Teacher of the Year, Ms. Walsh, whose AP Government class was engaged in a dynamic Blooket review with students competing for points. Assistant Principal Mr. Barfield even joined in but ultimately couldn't top the charts. Meanwhile, Ms. Teachout’s dance students were perfecting their routines for this Friday's Winter Concert. Very impressive choreography! We also caught Ms. Egli’s PE class working on their jumpers, students laser-focused in Ms. Daniels' social studies class, and the Student Services team collaborating to meet student needs. It's inspiring to see this level of commitment from our students and staff every day!

#ABSSAlert | Due to a hazardous weather outlook and winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service for our area, Alamance-Burlington School System will be closed for all students and staff today, Monday, December 8, 2025.
This means all schools and facilities will be closed for students and staff, and there will be no after school activities. Forecasts show a rain and snow mix beginning mid-morning, transitioning to all snow early afternoon.
We tracked the weather overnight, hoping to avoid a closure and preserve instructional time with our students. We understand that late calls are difficult for everyone, and we appreciate your understanding.
Please stay safe!

Remote medical care is now available at R. Homer Andrews Elementary School through a partnership with Cone Health! Today, members of the community including Cone Health representatives, School Board, County Commissioner Kelly Allen, Burlington Pediatrics, and Impact Alamance, joined Principal Benson and Dr. Fleming for the official unveiling of the telehealth program at Andrews! 🏥 🧑⚕️
Cone Health’s school-based telehealth program partners with ABSS to reduce chronic absenteeism and increase student wellness by providing convenient, on-site healthcare. The program places a trained staff member in the school who facilitates a virtual medical appointment between the student, their parent/guardian (joining remotely), and a healthcare provider (physician or nurse practitioner). Using specialized equipment like electronic stethoscopes and high-definition cameras, the provider can diagnose and treat minor illnesses such as strep throat, flu, and earaches, administer immediate care, and send prescriptions to a local pharmacy. Crucially, the visits are covered by most insurance, and are provided at no cost to uninsured families, allowing students to receive care quickly and return to class the same day, preventing missed instructional time.
We're thankful for our partnership with Cone and the benefits this program will provide for our students and families! ❤️

What an incredible week for our Alamance Virtual School middle schoolers! From November 10-14, Ms. Tonya Dobson's science class had the adventure of a lifetime at Yellowstone National Park. Students learned directly from experts—renowned wolf observer Rick McIntyre, wolf researcher Taylor Rabe, Yellowstone Forever's field education manager Sam Archibald, and guide Melissa Dowland—exploring everything from wildlife and plants to the park's stunning geological and geothermal features. And as if that wasn't enough, they even witnessed the Northern Lights!
