Track Champions

CUMMINGS — THE TOP INDOOR TRACK & FIELD PROGRAM IN NORTH CAROLINA FOR 2025–2026

What our student‑athletes and coaches have accomplished in track and field has no comparison at the high school level in either North or South Carolina. At this point, the evidence is overwhelming. The Cummings girls’ program stands alone.

Since girls first began competing in NCHSAA Championships in 1972, Cummings has won 14% of all titles ever awarded—despite the first championship not arriving until 1987. Only 16% of NCHSAA member schools have won even one state championship. Cummings has won 32. That alone places the Lady Cavaliers in a category all their own.

But the story is even stronger.

Cummings is the only program in North Carolina history to win state championships in every NCHSAA classification, demonstrating unmatched quality, depth, and consistency across generations.

• 1996: Cummings won the 1A/2A/3A/4A Indoor State Championship, defeating the entire state.

• 2007: When the 1A/2A/3A classification was created, Cummings won the very first title—and

five of the seven contested during that era.

• 2014: Reclassified into 1A/2A, Cummings immediately won the first championship in the new

format and went on to win five before the next realignment.

• 2025–2026: Moved into the newly formed 4A classification, Cummings once again won the first championship available.

Every time the NCHSAA has redrawn the map, Cummings has planted its flag at the top. Each year, once all state championships are complete, MilesplitNC merges every performance from every classification into a single hypothetical “Meet of Champions.” They score it 1–8, just like a real meet, to determine which school would win if all classifications competed together. This year, Cummings would have won the Meet of Champions.

And here is what makes that achievement extraordinary:

Only three Cummings athletes were needed to outscore entire programs with far larger squads. That level of dominance is almost unheard of in high school track and field. The 2025–2026 season simply reaffirmed what decades of results have already proven:

Cummings High School is the premier indoor track and field program in North Carolina—and one of the greatest dynasties in the history of the Carolinas.
