#ABSSAlert | Due to a hazardous weather outlook and winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service for our area, Alamance-Burlington School System will be closed for all students and staff today, Monday, December 8, 2025.

This means all schools and facilities will be closed for students and staff, and there will be no after school activities. Forecasts show a rain and snow mix beginning mid-morning, transitioning to all snow early afternoon.

We tracked the weather overnight, hoping to avoid a closure and preserve instructional time with our students. We understand that late calls are difficult for everyone, and we appreciate your understanding.

Please stay safe!

Remote medical care is now available at R. Homer Andrews Elementary School through a partnership with Cone Health! Today, members of the community including Cone Health representatives, School Board, County Commissioner Kelly Allen, Burlington Pediatrics, and Impact Alamance, joined Principal Benson and Dr. Fleming for the official unveiling of the telehealth program at Andrews! 🏥 🧑‍⚕️

Cone Health’s school-based telehealth program partners with ABSS to reduce chronic absenteeism and increase student wellness by providing convenient, on-site healthcare. The program places a trained staff member in the school who facilitates a virtual medical appointment between the student, their parent/guardian (joining remotely), and a healthcare provider (physician or nurse practitioner). Using specialized equipment like electronic stethoscopes and high-definition cameras, the provider can diagnose and treat minor illnesses such as strep throat, flu, and earaches, administer immediate care, and send prescriptions to a local pharmacy. Crucially, the visits are covered by most insurance, and are provided at no cost to uninsured families, allowing students to receive care quickly and return to class the same day, preventing missed instructional time.

We're thankful for our partnership with Cone and the benefits this program will provide for our students and families! ❤️

What an incredible week for our Alamance Virtual School middle schoolers! From November 10-14, Ms. Tonya Dobson's science class had the adventure of a lifetime at Yellowstone National Park. Students learned directly from experts—renowned wolf observer Rick McIntyre, wolf researcher Taylor Rabe, Yellowstone Forever's field education manager Sam Archibald, and guide Melissa Dowland—exploring everything from wildlife and plants to the park's stunning geological and geothermal features. And as if that wasn't enough, they even witnessed the Northern Lights!

Our high school CTE students spent a day in the Alamance Community College Advanced Applied Technology Center for hands-on demonstrations, interactions with industry professionals, and exploration of career pathways in advanced manufacturing, including HVAC and Automotive Repair! These skills are in high demand and ABSS offers College and Technical Education pathways that lead students from classes to careers like these!

As we continue into the school year, we're excited to look back at the amazing progress during the first nine weeks! Our Progress Report Video highlights three key areas:

📵 Cell phone-free classrooms leading to greater student connection and engagement.

🤝 Strong relationships that are building confident learners.

💡 Data-driven, standards-aligned instruction challenging and supporting every student.

We're proud of this progress and encourage you to keep the conversation going at home! Ask your student about what they're learning class and connections at school. Thank you for being a vital part of the #ABSSCommunity!

As we approach Veterans Day next Tuesday, these first graders at E.M. Holt Elementary School had the honor of learning from local heroes as Rodney Smith from the 40&8 Veterans Honor Society Voiture 1237 of Alamance County, along with veterans from American Legion Post 63 and other organizations, visited to teach about the American flag. 🇺🇸 The veterans shared the flag's history, the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance, and demonstrated proper flag folding while explaining the significance of each fold. Students learned about respectful care and display of the flag and enjoyed a moving poem before receiving their very own 4" x 6" American flag to take home! This meaningful program visits all our elementary schools each year!

𝗔𝗕𝗦𝗦 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗣 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: We are proud to share that ABSS was recognized today at the State Board of Education work session in Raleigh as one of only four districts selected statewide to present our Advanced Placement program successes. Representing ABSS were Angee Reed, Advanced Learners Coordinator; Bear Bryant, Principal of Western Alamance High School; April Williams, Western Alamance teacher; and Superintendent Dr. Fleming.

Our district has demonstrated exceptional growth in both AP enrollment and student performance. Student participation in AP courses has steadily increased over the past two years to an all-time high of 1,295 students in 2025, representing a 23.1% increase from the prior year. Even more remarkable is our students' achievement on AP exams. Since 2023, the number of qualifying scores of 3 or higher has more than doubled, reaching 1,426 qualifying scores in 2025—a 46.7% increase from the previous year.

These outstanding results reflect our commitment to expanding access to rigorous, college-level coursework while providing the support our students need to excel. This growth spans all demographics and schools across our district, demonstrating that we are creating equitable opportunities for all students to succeed at the highest academic levels.

Following the work session, Dr. Fleming joined State Superintendent Green and other education leaders for a press conference highlighting these achievements. We celebrate our dedicated students, teachers, and administrators whose hard work has made this success possible.

We're excited to share highlights from Honda Manufacturing Day, where our high school CTE students toured Honda's North Carolina Manufacturing facility in Haw River! This facility, which began ATV production in 2023, is the exclusive North American production source for Honda ATVs with products shipped worldwide.

During the visit, students experienced the entire manufacturing journey, from raw materials through final assembly. Honda team members shared insights about the facility's operations, production techniques, quality assurance processes, and the diverse career paths available in today's manufacturing industry. A highlight for many was testing their skills on a realistic ATV driving simulator!

We're grateful to Honda for welcoming our students and providing this hands-on learning opportunity, and to our CTE teachers who made this experience possible.
